Einst gab das Internet ein Symbol für eine Zukunft mit freier Kommunikation ab, mit wachsender Zivilgesellschaft, dem Zugang zu Wissen unabhängig vom privaten Kapital. Solche Vorstellungen klingen in Zeiten des WWW inzwischen nach wohlfeilen Märchen, längst zerrieben zwischen Web-Institutionen, mal privaten, mal staatlichen. Sie operieren aus einem weitgehend unsichtbaren Hintergrund heraus, der sich auf eine enorme technologische Infrastruktur stützt, die hunderttausenden Menschenjägern rund um die Welt für dieses und jenes dienstbar ist.
Niemanden schert es, meinen viele Uninteressierte, die sich aber eher unter der steigenden Welle von Berichten über irrwitzige Einschüchterungen, Verbote, Beschränkungen versuchen unauffällig wegzuducken. Dieses Wegducken wird zum Dauerklima westlicher Gesellschaften, die darin schnell zu Ländern wie China und Russland konvergieren, und es ist unheimlich in der klaglosen Hinnahme, der ersten Stufe ihrer allgemeinen Durchsetzung.
Deswegen haben Posts wie dieser ein diabolisches Moment, weil sie helfen könnten, die Selbstzensur, eine wachsende Zurückhaltung in privaten wie öffentlichen Äusserungen zu fördern: wer möchte schon “Falsches äussern”, das allwissende Institutionen zur faschen Zeit aus der Tasche ziehen könnten? Denn dann ist es vielleicht vorbei mit Job, Reise, Zukunft oder Erfahrungen, und wer möchte das schon, wenn es um das Fortkommen geht? Allerdings würden wir dieser Art Zensur selbst nachgeben, wenn wir nicht darüber schrieben.
Ein charakteristisches Beispiel erzählte die Tage der Journalist und Hobbymusiker
Johannes Artikel leitet die Verbindung zwischen den Inhalten seiner Mails und einem achttausend Kilometer entfernten Wachmann mit den folgenden Sätzen ein: “Wenn du schon mal in die USA gereist bist, dann weißt du, wie unfassbar unfreundlich die US-amerikanischen Grenzbeamten sein können. Wie unfassbar asozial sie allerdings wirklich sind, musste ich Mitte August am eigenen Leib erfahren: Mit einer Leibesvisitation am Minneapolis Airport, drei Stunden Horrorverhör und schließlich der Ausweisung zurück nach Europa.”
Nachdem ihm die Grenzüberwachung klar machte „America knows everything“, und er froh war, wegen eines geplanten Musikauftritts in den Staates nicht sofort im Gefängnis zu landen, wurde er ohne Angabe von Gründen in ein Flugzeug nach Europa verfrachtet und flugs abgeschoben.
